FAQs
How does the Ford Digital Experience technology compare to SYNC?
The Ford Digital Experience is a new spin on our in-vehicle technology. We’ve updated the cluster and in-dash screen as well as integrated Google apps and services like Google Assistant, Google Maps and more on Google Play. It also offers 5G connectivity.
Both the Ford Digital Experience and SYNC® have Alexa Built-in integration and Ford Premium Connectivity available, as well as integration with your phone and many other shared features.
And the integration of Google apps and services into our new experience doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. You have the power to choose — these options are available and can work together seamlessly. (For example, you can talk to Google Assistant while Apple CarPlay is active.)
What is the trial length for Ford Premium Connectivity with the Ford Digital Experience?
You will be enrolled in a one-year included plan of Ford Premium Connectivity that begins on your warranty start date. You’ll receive notifications in the FordPass® App to confirm feature activation. Ford Premium Connectivity enables enhanced Alexa Built-in functionality such as streaming entertainment like music, plus flash briefings, long form news, and in-vehicle games.
After your trial, you can renew your Connected Services plan through Ford.ca/myaccount or within the FordPass App from the account page.
What functionalities do I lose when my Ford Premium Connectivity subscription duration ends?
Having Ford Premium Connectivity available in your vehicle will provide you with the best possible experience. If connectivity is no longer available, some features within the Ford Digital Experience will no longer function at all or the same as before.
Without connectivity, the following changes will happen to in-vehicle features:
- Google Maps will not provide real time traffic data or have the ability to download new offline maps
- With Google Assistant, you can control local vehicle controls such as playing the radio and adjusting the climate controls while keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel
- Google Play is not available without connectivity
- Alexa will still be available for use if you are within the complimentary three-year trial of Alexa Built-in. Enhanced Alexa Built-in functionality such as streaming music, flash briefings, long form news, and in-vehicle games through Alexa will not be available without Ford Premium Connectivity or another connectivity source
Once your Ford Premium Connectivity subscription ends, you can continue your connected experience by connecting your vehicle to the internet through a Wi-Fi hotspot such as your phone when you are on the go or a stationary Wi-Fi source such as your home internet when parked.
What Google capabilities are available for the Ford Digital Experience if I’m not connected to the internet?
When you are not connected to the internet, certain features are not available. You will still be able to use navigation features if you have enabled auto-downloaded offline maps on Google Maps. When connectivity is present, Google Maps automatically downloads maps based on current location and where the vehicle thinks users will go. You will then have access to this offline map data for use of navigation features. To ensure map data is always available, turn on “auto-download” in the Privacy Centre.
You can also ask Google Assistant to complete certain vehicle functions, such as playing the radio.
Google Play cannot be used to download or update apps if connectivity is not available. Some apps might be able to be used without connectivity if they were downloaded when connectivity was available.
Which apps are compatible with the Ford Digital Experience?
The following apps are embedded in the Ford Digital Experience:
- Google Assistant
- Google Maps
- Google Play
- Phone
- FM Radio
- AM Radio
- SiriusXM
- Bluetooth Audio
- Messages
- Apple CarPlay compatibility
- Android Auto compatibility
- Alexa
- Towing
- Wi-Fi Hotspot
- Digital Owner’s Manual
- Software Updates
- Upfit Controls
- Settings
- Games
- USB Audio
- YouTube
You can also add additional apps through Google Play. Updates on Google Play will occur automatically such as the addition of new apps.
Apps that you have downloaded on Google Play will also be updated automatically when updates are available.
Note: Updates to the Play Store and downloaded apps will only happen if the vehicle is connected to Ford Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi.
Embedded apps cannot be deleted but some can be disabled. If the app is disabled, it will no longer show up on the App Drawer, and it will not function. To use the app again, you would enable it the same way it was disabled. This can be done in the Apps section of the settings menu.
