Getting Ready for Your Fast Charging Adapter
Select from the questions below to prepare for your new Fast Charging Adapter:
What is the North American Charging Standard (NACS)?
The NACS is a charging system that is being adopted across North America. NACS chargers will be available for both public charging and home use.
NACS is also referred to as "SAE J3400".
Why do I need an adapter?
Due to the difference between the NACS plug design and the charge port on your vehicle, adapters are required for your electric Ford to use NACS chargers, including over 15,300 upgraded Tesla Superchargers.
- The Fast Charging Adapter available from Ford is compatible with DC Fast Chargers, such as Tesla Superchargers.
- A different adapter is required to charge at Level 1 and Level 2 AC NACS chargers. Adapters to use at Level 1 or Level 2 NACS chargers are available from third-party sellers.
WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious injury and property damage, only use NACS DC adapters sold or provided by Ford or Tesla for use at Tesla Superchargers. Tesla prohibits the use of any other adapter with Tesla charging stations.
WARNING: Do not attempt to use NACS AC adapters with NACS DC Fast Chargers. Failure to follow these instructions may result in vehicle damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.
Important:
- Ford does not guarantee compatibility with aftermarket charging adapters.
- Ford does not recommend or endorse specific aftermarket adapters.
Why are there two different adapter designs from Ford?
To better serve Ford electric vehicle customers and increase supply, Ford has a new, approved Ford-branded Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) developed exclusively for Ford.
The Ford-branded Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) will be manufactured specifically for Ford by Lectron and is approved for use on designated Tesla Superchargers and other DC Fast Chargers with NACS connections.
Important:
- To avoid the risk of serious injury and property damage, only use NACS adapters sold or provided by Ford or Tesla for use at Tesla Superchargers.
- Tesla prohibits the use of any other adapter with Tesla charging stations.
- Ford does not guarantee compatibility with aftermarket charging adapters.
Is there a difference in how the Ford-branded Fast Charging Adapter and the Fast Charging Adapter operate?
Performance is identical for both Ford-approved adapters. Notable differences include the physical dimensions and the disconnection process.
The Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) has a release tab to disconnect from the Tesla charging cord.
The Ford-branded Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) has a release lever to disconnect from the Tesla charging cord.
What is the Tesla Supercharger network?
The Tesla Supercharger network has more than 15,300 designated Tesla Superchargers across Canada and the United States and is a new fast charging option through the BlueOval Charge Network for electric Ford drivers.
Is a Software Update required to use Tesla Superchargers?
While updates are not required, software updates will enhance the experience at Tesla Superchargers. We recommend that you enable automatic updates to receive software updates and take advantage of these enhancements.
Note: E-Transit customers need to contact a Ford Dealer to receive these updates.
Is a BlueOval Charge Network membership required to use the Tesla Supercharger network and is there a cost to sign up?
No, the BlueOval Charge Network is a no-annual-fee membership that can be used to activate and pay for charging at designated Tesla Superchargers. Membership also enables Plug & Charge at designated Tesla Superchargers.
All electric Ford customers have access to the BlueOval Charge Network, no matter when they purchased their vehicle, with no annual fee.
A Fast Charging Adapter is required for your electric Ford to use designated Tesla Superchargers.
