Can I drive my Ford while it is updating?
Some updates can be completed while your vehicle is being driven, while others require your vehicle to be off. Refer to your SYNC version below to learn more.
Types of Software Updates for Your Vehicle
Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below:
SYNC®*4A and SYNC 4
- Some updates will happen seamlessly in the background while you are driving. You will receive a notification on your vehicle's touchscreen if consent or a Wi-Fi connection is required. Otherwise, the system will update automatically and an "Update Successful" icon will appear once the vehicle is restarted. You can tap the icon to read details about the update or view details on your Ford account.
- Non-drivable updates require your vehicle to be turned off while updating. Most complete within minutes, while others may take longer**. You should schedule the update to occur when you do not need to drive your vehicle, such as overnight.
SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC
Wi-Fi (SYNC 3 required)
You can drive and use SYNC during the update.
Flash drive (SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC)
Your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the SYNC update installation process. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process starts, you may drive your vehicle.
