How do I replace my vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number tag?
Replacement Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) tags/plates (located under the windshield) are only available through a Ford Dealer and must be installed in their presence.
Obtaining an Older Vehicle Identification Tag
If your dealer is unable to provide a tag due to the age of your vehicle, you may be able to locate a replacement through a third-party company.
Before purchasing a tag, it is important to know which type of tag your vehicle has. Ford has used several methods to identify vehicles and equipment over the years, such as:
- Prior to the 1950s: Aluminum plates were mounted on the firewall.
- In the 1950s and 1960s: A combination of aluminum tags and sticky labels were mounted in the door jamb area.
- In the 1970s: Sticky labels were used for vehicle identification.
For a list of Ford-authorized approvers who can provide replacement tags for older vehicles, choose the tag material type in the drop-down options below.
Notes:
- Many sources claim to be authorized by Ford but are not licensed.
- To receive a replacement, you must be able to produce an original or damaged tag.
