How do I turn off automatic Software Updates for my Ford?
If you choose to have full control of the Software Updates for your SYNC®* system and want to know the details prior to the update, you can turn off Automatic Updates on the in-vehicle SYNC screen.
Turning Off Automatic Updates
Important: Ensure your vehicle is on and running in a well-ventilated area, and is in Park (P).
Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below to learn how to turn off automatic software updates.
Notes:
- If your SYNC generation is not listed, it does not receive Software Updates.
- If you need assistance determining the generation of your SYNC system, select the first drop-down option.
- Actual screens may vary. See your Owner’s Manual for information specific to your vehicle.
Identifying Your SYNC Generation
Two resources to help you identify your vehicle's SYNC generation are the:
- SYNC and Navigation Updates page. Either:
- Enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select Check for update.
Log in with your Lincoln credentials, choose a vehicle from your garage, and select Check for updates.
Note: Your SYNC generation will appear on the right-hand side of the page.

SYNC 4A
To disable automatic Software Updates with SYNC 4A:
- Tap Settings or the Home icon (varies by software version) on your vehicle's SYNC screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Systems Updates.
- Toggle the Automatic Updates option to Off. A confirmation pop-up will appear.
- Tap Continue to confirm.
You can use the System Updates section in your SYNC settings to view available updates in the future.
SYNC 4
To disable automatic Software Updates with SYNC 4:
- Tap Settings on your vehicle's SYNC screen.
- Select Systems Updates.
- Toggle the Automatic Updates option to Off. A confirmation pop-up will appear.
- Tap Continue to confirm.
You can use the System Updates section in your SYNC settings to view available updates in the future.
*Don’t drive while distracted. Use voice-operated systems when possible; don’t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all features are compatible with all phones.
