How do I use a Ford Assistant Wake Word with SYNC?
You can say commands or ask questions to Ford Assistant in your SYNC®* 4A- or SYNC 4-equipped vehicle using a wake word instead of the Push-To-Talk button on your vehicle's steering wheel.
Using a Ford Assistant Wake Word
Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below to learn how to enable, disable, or set a wake word with Ford Assistant using SYNC. If you need assistance identifying your SYNC generation, refer to the SYNC Visual Reference Guide which has example images of each SYNC generation.
SYNC 4A
Enabling or Disabling the Wake Word
To turn the wake word feature on or off using SYNC 4A:
- Tap Settings on your vehicle's SYNC screen. If you see a Home icon instead of Settings, select the Home icon.
- Select Ford Assistant.

Toggle the Listen for Wake Word to enable or disable it.
Note: You can select "i” to the right for a brief description of the listen for wake word options.
Setting a Preferred Wake Word
To set your preferred wake word (once enabled):
- Tap Settings on your vehicle's SYNC screen. If you see a Home icon instead of Settings, select the Home icon.
- Select Ford Assistant from the list on the left of the screen.
- Toggle Listen for Wake Word on.
- Choose the Wake Word you would like to use from the list.
Enabling or Disabling Command Lists
SYNC can respond with a command list after saying the wake word. To turn this option on or off:
- Tap Settings on your vehicle's SYNC screen.
- Select Voice.

*Don’t drive while distracted. Use voice-operated systems when possible; don’t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all features are compatible with all phones.
